A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his government's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The building of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its duties in public works. They were built at an rapid pace, surpassing forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised ongoing concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an immediate suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This halt was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and management of these national projects.
